Ten Snacks to Make Around the Campfire

Venture RV Ten Snacks to Make Around the Campfire

While you’re hanging out around the campfire, take this time to make some delicious snacks! Below are a few ideas and recipes:

  1. 1. S’mores, of Course

While classic s’mores will always be first in our hearts, consider playing around with adding ingredients and making even tastier creations. Experiment with different kinds of chocolate, add nuts, Reese’s cups, try different cookie options instead of graham crackers, or whatever else floats your boat.

You can also make “walking s’mores”, or s’mores in a bag, like Idea from A Girl and a Glue Gun by Kim West does.

Like walking tacos, this just involves making the s’more inside a bag to help contain the mess. Get a bag of cookies, such as teddy grahams (or crush up some cookies in a small plastic baggy), throw in some squares of chocolate or chocolate chips, roast up a marshmallow, add it to the bag, mix it up, and enjoy! You can, of course, also add other ingredients as your heart calls to you to add some extra flavors.

  2. 2. Foil-Packed Loaded Fries

Grab the foil, spray the inside with non-stick cooking spray, layer in some fries (they can be frozen to make things easy!), add your toppings, wrap it up, and cook!

Some great toppings to add include cheddar cheese, nacho cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, salsa, jalapenos, and extras like green onions, parsley, pepper flakes, etc.

A delicious alternative to regular fries is sweet potato fries, which you can also dress up! Butter and cinnamon are classical options, but you can also add marshmallows, jams, and even goat cheese to get fancy!

  3. 3. Camping Quesadillas

Grab your tin foil again, spread out a tortilla, load it up with cheese and toppings (pre-prep a protein choice to make it a little quicker), fold the tortilla in half, and throw it on a grate over the fire. Again, whatever toppings you like work here, but some ideas include avocado, guacamole, tomatoes, olives, salsa, and canned beans.

  4. 4. Campfire Orange Brownies

Slice some oranges in half and clean out the insides until you just have the rind. Grab some prepped brownie box mix, pour it in one half of the rind, cover it with the other, and wrap it in foil. Roast them over the fire, and voila! It’s also been suggested that if you can add ice cream and other toppings on them to take them that extra step.

  5. 5. Roasted Cinnamon Rolls

Super easy: take a package of crescent rolls, grab one of the individual pastries, wrap it around a skewer (poke it alternately through the stick to keep the roll in place), and roast it! Slather it in frosting or a powdered-sugar-and-water mix, and sprinkle with cinnamon.

  6. 6. Bacon on a Stick

Basically, just repeat the wrapping steps from when you made the roasted cinnamon rolls, but with bacon, and roast it and you’re good to go! You can add some spices or sugar if you’re feeling fancy.

  7. 7. Campfire Cocoa

If you’ve brought a Dutch oven along with you, you can simply heat up some water and open a packet of hot chocolate mix, and you’re sipping your way to happiness!

You can also make a big batch of cocoa in the Dutch oven that everybody can scoop out of.

Check out this recipe for the World’s Greatest Camping Cocoa, by 50 Campfires:

    Ingredients

    Dry Ingredients

    • 2 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 cup of powdered cocoa (unsweetened)
    • 2 ½ cups powdered milk
    • ½ tsp. salt
    • ½ cup dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips (chopped as fine as you can make them)

    Liquid Ingredients (Per Serving)

    • ½ cup heavy cream
    • ½ cup milk
    • Chocolate syrup (and/or flavored syrups like you add to coffee) to taste
    • Large, toasting sized marshmallows

    Instructions

    Directions

    • Mix together dry ingredients in a large bowl at home, then store in airtight container. Something unbreakable is best for camping
    • Combine three heaping tablespoons of mix with ½ cup heavy cream and ½ cup milk (per serving) in a Dutch Oven or other fire safe kettle.
    • Warm over campfire. Make it good and hot, but don’t let it boil. You need the heat to melt the chocolate chip fragments thoroughly.
    • Toast a couple of large marshmallows over the campfire until they are golden brown and the centers are nearly liquid.
    • Pour or ladle the hot cocoa into mugs and stir in any syrups to taste.
    • Top with one or two toasted marshmallows. Ooze the center out of the marshmallow and stir into the beverage.
    • Drink while it’s still hot.
  8. 8. Banana Boats

Banana boats are another campfire classic, next to s’mores! Like with s’mores (or any of these recipes, really!), feel free to switch things up and swap things out to fit your preferences.

Chocolate, marshmallows, nuts, coconut, honey, and strawberries are some tasty options to add to the boat.

To make a banana boat, take a whole banana, split it down the middle (keep the peel, cutting into the banana), and stuff it with whatever fillings you choose. Fold it back together, wrap it in foil, and roast it!

  9. 9. Grilled Caramel Apple Crunch

Slice up some apples, grab some butter, sprinkle on the cinnamon and brown sugar, wrap in foil, and roast! Like apple crumble, this sweet treat will warm your soul!

  10. 10. Campfire Elotes, or Mexican Street Corn

Roast your husked corn over the fire until cooked through and charred. Once it’s done, slather it in a cream mixture made of equal parts mayo, Mexican crema, Cotija cheese, and fresh cilantro. Sprinkle with more cheese, some line juice, and some chili powder, and enjoy!
